Cynthia C. Moser, a partner with the Heidman Law Firm PLLC in Sioux City, has received The Iowa State Bar Association’s 2018 Award of Merit, the highest award given annually by the organization representing Iowa’s attorneys statewide.

Created in 1947, the Award of Merit recognizes an individual’s selfless dedication to the legal profession, the bar association and their community. Cindy Moser embodies these principles upon which the Award of Merit was established, and was granted the award during the ISBA’s Annual Awards Gala on Wednesday, June 20, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.

Admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1977 after graduating from the University of Iowa College of Law with honors, Cindy began her career as a clerk for the Honorable W.C. Stuart, Chief Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, before entering private practice in Sioux City. In her 41 years of practice, she has tirelessly studied and applied the law to assist and counsel her clients, focusing on healthcare and employment law. Throughout her distinguished career, Cindy has also been actively involved in making the Iowa legal profession one of the best in the nation. She served as the ISBA president in 2012-2013 – the third woman to hold the association’s top position. She currently serves on the Administrative Committee and as chair of the ISBA Scope and Correlations Committee, in addition to numerous other roles. Cindy also served as the chairperson of the two Judicial Selection Committees convened by Senators Grassley and Ernst to recommend candidates for nomination and appointment to the U.S. District Courts of Iowa. The Iowa Lawyer

2018 ISBA Award of Merit

On this 20th day of June, 2018, The Iowa State Bar Association convenes at a special banquet to present the highest honor the Association can bestow on an individual – its Award of Merit.

Created in 1947, many aspire, but few attain this coveted award. Those who attain it do so because they have entered the rarefied air of selfless dedication to the legal profession, the bar association, and their communities, and have exhibited unequaled passion for the legal profession and their fellow attorneys. Cynthia C. Moser embodies these principles upon which the Award of Merit was established.

She is a frequent lecturer on health law and employment issues, and is widely recognized as a subject matter expert on the Affordable Care Act.

Throughout her distinguished career, Cindy has been actively involved in making the Iowa legal profession one of the best in the nation. As ISBA president in 2012-2013 – the third woman to hold the association’s top position – she focused on providing services to the members to help them meet the changing legal environment. She also focused on new lawyers entering the profession, searching for ways to address student loan debt and find meaningful employment. Her unflappable demeanor and commitment to fairness as president during the tumultuous 2012 retention election of Iowa Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins provided a calming effect on the frequently contentious clashes between the opposing factions. Cindy’s countless presentations on the value of Iowa’s judicial selection and retention process to citizen groups and to the media were critical to the success of the ISBA’s efforts.

Cindy has been active in The Iowa State Bar Association throughout her career, continuing her active involvement even after serving as president. She currently serves on the Administrative Committee helping decide administrative and legislative policies and other matters between Board of Governors’ meetings. In addition, she serves as chair of the Scope and Correlations Committee where she guides the five members of the committee in studying the structure, function and work of the various standing and special committees, the sections and other agencies of the Association, and in making recommendations to the Board of Governors that result in better correlation and development of the association’s work. She has previously served as chair of the ISBA’s Health Law Section, and as a director for the Iowa State Bar Foundation. Cindy also served as the chairperson of the two Judicial Selection Committees convened by Senators Grassley and Ernst to recommend candidates for nomination and appointment to the U.S. District Courts of Iowa.

A partner with the Heidman Law Firm PLLC in Sioux City, this Kanawha/Orange City-native also takes time from her law practice to contribute to her community. She served six years on the Sioux City Art Center Board of Trustees, and two separate stints on the Art Center Association Board, a private non-profit fundraising arm of the art center. She also has served on the Morningside College Board, the Mercy Child Advocacy Center Advisory Board, the Mercy Foundation Board, the Girls, Inc. Board, the Iowa Legal Aid Board, and the University of Iowa Alumni Leadership Council.

When not busy practicing law or serving her community, Cindy relishes spending time with her family in her contemporary-style home, which she and her husband, Dan, purchased in 1992, and have meticulously remodeled. Interior design, cooking, gardening, and reading are favorite pastimes.

The Iowa State Bar Association is fortunate to have Cindy as a member and to benefit from her many talents. The Association looks forward to many more years of her generous contributions. As a way of saying thanks and honoring the wonderful person she is, The Iowa State Bar Association presents its 2018 Award of Merit to this giant of the profession:
